Wood processing
Amongst the many uses of Schubert & Salzer valves are the manufacture or processing of wood bulk materials as well as the production of real wood veneers.

Bulk materials

Convection drying is used widely in the production or processing of bulk materials such as wood chips, sawdust and wood shavings, used, for example, in the production of fuel pellets, particle board or MDF (medium density fibreboard). In this operation, a hot gas (air, inert gases, flue gases or superheated steam) transfers its energy to the materials requiring drying. In doing so, it acts as a drying agent, absorbing the moisture being released from them and conveys the moisture out of the dryer. The traditional convection dryers, used in the manufacture or processing of wood chips, sawdust and wood shavings, for example, are the so-called tumble dryers.

For the supply of the drying medium (air, steam or other medium) in to the tumble dryer, as well as for removing the resulting effluent water, both sliding gates valves as well as ball sector valves from Schubert & Salzer can be used.

Due to its special characteristics, the sliding gate valve is suited for feeding hot air, steam or other gases. At the heart of this valve are two slotted discs sliding against each other and forming a seal. One of the discs, a seal plate permanently secured in the body at right angles to the direction of flow has a certain number of transverse slots of the same height. A second non-rotating disc with the same slotted arrangement is moved vertically against the first, thus changing the flow cross section. The pressure difference forces the moving disc against the stationary disc. Thus the sliding disc valve seals itself without the need for a metallic seat. Accordingly, among the many advantages of this valve are the good quality of its seal, significantly less energy consumption due to its short stroke and optimal flow control. With their compact construction, sliding gate valves are also maintenance-friendly. An overview of all features of this valve series can be found by clicking here.

During the manufacture or processing of wood bulk materials, the effluent water produced usually contains fibres and larger residues which ball sector valves are ideally suited to control. Ball sector valves can be used for nearly all shut-off and control tasks, in particular where media are contaminated, abrasive or pasty.

With ball sectors specially machined out, they are self-cleaning and can be actuated very precisely with pneumatic and electrical actuators and controllers. These properties make them virtually indispensable in the processing of wood chips, sawdust and wood shavings which are produced, for example, for fuel pellets, particle board or MDF.

Veneers
An important step in the production of real wood veneers is the damping of the logs in so-called steam pits. In this process, the important factor is providing an even circulation of steam around the wood. In this case also, the sliding gate valve is well suited due to its outstanding control performance.
